In 1994, two electrical engineering grad students at Stanford University blew off their doctoral theses in pursuit of cataloguing their favorite web sites. Holed up in a campus trailer, the pair created “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web,” a catchy moniker later replaced with the more memorable Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle… or Yahoo!. Their procrastination-borne hobby eventually grew into a global network of branded properties that’s visited by approximately half of all people connected to the Internet. An awesome responsibility to be sure… and one we Yahoos don’t take lightly. As stated in our values, we never forget that you come to us by choice and we set out to earn your bookmark every time our alarm clock goes off.
As part of that commitment, we welcome you to , where we invite you behind the screen. We’ll provide insights into our company, our people, our culture, and the things that occupy our minds. We’ll cover emerging trends, provide some behind-the-scenes commentary, profile interesting Yahoos, spotlight our beloved users, reveal some of our quirks, tap into guest bloggers, sprinkle in some videos, podcasts and photo essays, and generally think out loud (lucky you… you get to listen). Sure, we’ll touch on news, but we’ll try to provide a new twist on things to make every visit worth your while.Yodel Anecdotal
And in spite of what you’ll read about Yahoos in the dictionary { ya•hoo \ yā-(,)hü \ n. a boorish, crass or stupid person }, we’re also very much interested in hearing your $.02. We encourage you to post your comments, quibbles, questions, suggestions – let us know if we’re hitting the spot, missing the mark or if you simply see things a different way. While you’re here, please use good blogging manners. You know the drill… stay on topic, be courteous and productive, and avoid profanity, racial slurs, patent rudeness or anything that violates our terms of service. This is a moderated site and we’ll reject comments that paint outside these proverbial lines. Oh, and if you have a stupendous story you think we ought to share with others, please contact us directly… and we’ll talk.
One final disclaimer: If you have an issue with a Yahoo! service or your Yahoo! account that requires support from Customer Care, please visit http://help.yahoo.com. Much as we’d love to help resolve your concern, support issues are way out of our realm.
Oh, and we’d like to thank intern extraordinaire Paul Stamatiou for building this site, Annette Leong for designing it, Richard Morgenstein for shooting its mastheads, and the nice people at Yahoo! Web Hosting for giving it a home.
Yodel on.
